Polia

Province: Vibo Valentia · Region: Calabria · Population: 1,048 · Postal code: 89813

The name is the Greek for city. After the earthquake of 1783 the people of Polia and Poliolo fled to the hamlets of Cellia and Menniti, and since the churches were down they planted three great crosses of olive wood in the upper part of the old village and gathered there to pray around the priest on feast days: the place is still called Trecroci.

There were fourteen water mills here, nearly all of them belonging to the better-off families, and each could grind two hundred kilos of wheat in an hour; the women strawed chairs with a marsh plant, and others wove the mats for the olive presses. In the village there is a museum for Fortunato Gaccetta, a sculptor born here in 1920, who won a gold medal at Stockholm and was named prince of art by the king of Spain.
