Saint Nicholas the Bishop and Our Lady of the Assumption, patrons of Stefanaconi
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Stefanaconi celebrates Saint Nicholas the Bishop and Our Lady of the Assumption together on 6 December.
The name is Greek, Stephanikónion, and the village lies east of Vibo, above the valley of the Mesima. The earthquake of 1905 took away its oldest church: San Nicola was completely destroyed, and where it stood there is now piazza della Madonnina, with a statue in the place of the altar. In piazza della Vittoria, beside the bronze Unknown Soldier, stands instead the monument to those killed by that earthquake: the village counts its dead in the square.
What Stefanaconi is known for, throughout the province, is its bread. It is the village's product of excellence, protected since 2018 by the municipal DeCo mark and sold across the Vibo country, and every seventeenth of August the village holds a bread festival that has been running for decades. The hills fall inside the Poro zone, so the pecorino del Monte Poro is made here too; and among the oldest trades tailoring and carpentry remain.
