Cairano

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 348 · Postal code: 83040

On the crag above Cairano stands an unusual installation: three wind organs, groups of pipes that sound when the wind blows, with no one touching them. Beneath the houses there are more than a hundred cellars dug into the rock, used since ancient times to keep wine. The old centre has kept its medieval shape, with narrow lanes climbing in a spiral.

On the hill of the Calvary an Iron Age necropolis was found, with grave goods local, Greek and Etruscan: the archaeological culture takes its name from the village, the Oliveto-Cairano culture. In 1963 a neorealist film, La donnaccia, was shot here, and many local people acted in it. In 2014 seven writers wrote seven stories about Cairano, in a project curated by the director Franco Dragone, who was born here.
