Avellino AV

Region: Campania · 118 towns · Population: 429,157

This is the corner of Campania with no coast at all. The province of Avellino is landlocked, wedged between Puglia and Basilicata to the east, Salerno to the south and the Naples area to the west, and it covers most of Irpinia — the historic district named after the Irpini, a Samnite tribe, though the medieval Angevin district of Principato Ultra, which Avellino has headed since 1806, has no direct descent from them.

Its 118 municipalities are nearly all small: only Avellino itself and Ariano Irpino, up on the hills near the Puglian border, pass twenty thousand people. What is left is a scatter of towns across valleys and ridges — Montoro, Solofra, Mercogliano, Grottaminarda — in wine country that gave Irpinia its reputation. It is not a half-day trip: you need a car, mountain roads and the patience to go slowly.
