Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Montefredane celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; since 2021 the day has also featured "Fiano&Fuoco", a re-enactment of the local farming tradition.
Montefredane was born high up out of necessity: the founding of the main settlement is dated to the sixth century, when the inhabitants of ancient Abellinum, today Atripalda, climbed up here in flight after the destruction of their city; the Romans, earlier, had lived lower down, around Arcella. The village appears in the Catalogus baronum between 1150 and 1168, as part of the county of Avellino. From 1650 to 1806 it belonged to the Caracciolo, who built the castle there: removed by the French, they came back with the Bourbon restoration, and at the beginning of the twentieth century they lost every local power and moved to Naples.
The municipal coat of arms has changed twice, and each change says something. An eighteenth-century seal, in use until 1809, carried a cross on a three-peaked mount; an emblem attested in 1865 showed a tower held up by two lions; in the nineteen-tens the present one was adopted, a lime tree rooted in a green field under an open sky. First religion, then power, then a tree. Today these hills are the production area of Fiano di Avellino, and since 2021, for the patron's feast in December, the village lights itself with wood braziers: an idea born during the energy crisis and grown into a festival.
