Quadrelle

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 1,893 · Postal code: 83020

On the arms of Quadrelle, granted in 1998, there are three letters: A.G.P. They stand for Ave Gratia Plena, the Latin beginning of the Hail Mary, and they were the motto of the Santa Casa dell'Annunziata of Naples. The Annunziata was the last feudal lord of Quadrelle, and it was the Annunziata that granted the village its administrative autonomy: the last master here was not a baron but a Neapolitan charitable institution. Beside the letters there are four towers, which recall the limits of the walls of the old castle of the Litto, on which Quadrelle depended — and their number, four, chimes with the name of the village. Before this coat of arms another was in use, with a blue band and a chestnut tree.

The comune is small but tall: between its lowest point and the top of Monte Litto there are more than a thousand metres of difference, while the village itself stands at three hundred metres, on the hillside, in the country they call the Baianese. The year is marked by two feasts. The first are the Battenti of saint John the Baptist, always held on a Sunday, in the middle of summer. The second is the Maio, celebrated on 17 January in honour of saint Anthony Abbot: one of those January occasions that in Campania mark the end of winter rather than the memory of the saint.
