Sant'Angelo a Scala

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 755 · Postal code: 83010

The name comes from Saint Michael the Archangel, whose cult was brought up here by the Lombards, who built him a church; the rest of it, a Scala, may describe the steep shape of the mountain or the climb that led from the village to a church higher up. Earlier still, at the place called Malfetana, there was a late Roman town named Asculam, and in the territory there are caves lived in since the Palaeolithic.

Under the Normans Sant'Angelo became a fief and got itself a castle with a fortified settlement around it: in 1160 Roger II granted it to Riccardo de Aquila, in 1466 it passed to the Carafa counts, who turned the fortress into a residence, and from 1623 it went to Alessandro Moschella, a soldier in Spanish service under the viceroy of Naples. The Irpinia earthquake of 1980 brought it down and no one has raised it again: today among its ruins, at the top of the village, they put on shows and plays.
