Senerchia

Province: Avellino · Region: Campania · Population: 1,014 · Postal code: 83050

The earthquake of the twenty-third of November 1980 razed the village and carried the water away too: some watercourses vanished, and among them the torrent La Pazzata. In 2010, after a rainy spring, La Pazzata ran again for a few weeks, and then vanished once more.

The castle, which the Lombards built to defend Conza, gave its name to a family: the Sinerchia, who held it for three centuries and after the barons' conspiracy took the name Scardaccione. In the church of San Michele there was a fourteenth-century wooden statue: the earthquake damaged it, and a bungled restoration wiped out its features for good.
