Apice

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 5,802 · Postal code: 82021

In 1504 king Ferdinand the Second of Aragon gave Apice a coat of arms with three mountains and ears of wheat, because the town, with the grain it grew and kept in its stores, had eased the famine that was afflicting the Kingdom of Naples that year. On today's arms the three mountains are still there, but in place of the ears there are six red flames.

On the twenty-first of August 1962 two shocks struck the Sannio and Irpinia: seventeen people died at Apice, and the ministry of public works ordered the evacuation of all six thousand five hundred inhabitants. Most of them moved to the new town, built on the plateau opposite, across the Calore. Some, though, stayed up there in spite of the order, and remained until 1980: it was the Irpinia earthquake that took the last of them away. Apice Vecchia is still there, empty.
