Benevento is a province with no real city. The capital, which shares the name, tops out just above 60,000 residents and is still far bigger than anything else: the next two towns, Montesarchio and Sant'Agata de' Goti, sit between eleven and thirteen thousand. The rest of the 78 municipalities are inland Campanian villages, many with residents in the hundreds, spread over a little more than 2,000 square kilometres.
You start in the capital, the only place here at city scale, and head out. Montesarchio and Sant'Agata de' Goti are the obvious next stops; Guardia Sanframondi and Morcone are worth the detour; Telese Terme puts the reason people go there right in its name, the springs. This is not a province you tick off a list in an afternoon. It rewards a slow pace, one small town at a time, and a schedule with gaps in it.
