San Lupo

Province: Benevento · Region: Campania · Population: 863 · Postal code: 82034

In April 1877 two anarchists, Errico Malatesta and Carlo Cafiero, rented a house here, and from San Lupo they set off the insurrection they meant to light in the Matese: it went badly, and within days. The village had then been in the province of Benevento for just sixteen years: before that it was in the district of Campobasso, in Molise.

Outside the village runs the stream of the Janare, the witches, and a bridge crosses it that bears their name. The story goes that a girl was thrown from that bridge, accused of witchcraft by a lord she had refused, and that her body was never found. The fountain of Sant'Angelo, of 1614, has three spouts and an inscription in Latin inviting pilgrims to drink.
