Striano

On 1 October 1799, in Naples, Filippetto Marino, prince of Striano, went to the scaffold for taking part in the Neapolitan Republic: before dying he kissed the executioner and said he forgave everyone. The fief had belonged to his family since 1698 and had been raised to a principality in 1718.

The village had been born far earlier, when the Benedictines drained the marshes between the Sarno and the Silva mala and in 1188 obtained permission from the lords of Striano to build mills there. After the landslide that struck neighbouring Sarno in 1998, many families moved here, away from the slopes at risk: since then Striano has not stopped growing.
