On the banks of the Sarno at Longola, excavations revealed something unique: a protohistoric village built on artificial islets and pile-dwellings, inhabited from the Bronze Age until the seventh century BC — when its people, it is believed, moved on to found Pompeii. The area is now an archaeological-naturalistic park reconstructing the huts and canals of that miniature Venice.
Poggiomarino, 21,206 residents in the Vesuvian hinterland twenty-five kilometres from Naples, owes Longola a place in international archaeological literature. The rest is a hard-working farming and residential town, gateway to the Sarno valley.
