Camerota

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 6,751 · Postal code: 84059

Camerota means curved, from the Greek kamarōtós or the Latin camurus: it refers to the limestone caves that open along the thirty-two kilometres of coast. Inside them lie layers of prehistory among the most important in Italy, with the remains of the animals that were hunted, hippopotamuses included. Much later the same caves sheltered Italo-Greek hermits, like the one at San Biagio.

A frontier ran through here: on one side the Lombard principality of Salerno, on the other the Byzantine theme of Calabria, where the language of church and administration was Greek. The monks were Italo-Greeks, and in an abbey near San Giovanni a Piro there was a scriptorium copying codices in Greek as early as 1020. The oldest church of Camerota, San Daniele Profeta, went on celebrating in the Greek rite almost to the eighteenth century. In 1552 the town was sacked by the Turks of the corsair Dragut.
