Salerno is Campania's largest province by area and, with 158 municipalities, the one with the most towns in the region. It faces south-west onto the Tyrrhenian Sea, borders the Naples metropolitan area to the north-west and Avellino to the north, and runs east as far as Basilicata. Its outline still traces the historic Principato Citeriore, which goes some way towards explaining how one province of just under 1.1 million people holds together such different landscapes.
The Amalfi Coast lies entirely inside the province. Amalfi has its cathedral at the top of a broad staircase; Ravello sits higher up, where Villa Rufolo and the terrace at Villa Cimbrone look out over the sea; Positano drops in stages to the Spiaggia Grande beach. Further south, at Capaccio Paestum, the Greek temples are still standing — reason enough to leave the coast road. The capital, Salerno, has the Arechi castle above the rooftops and a cathedral below it.
