Teggiano

Province: Salerno · Region: Campania · Population: 8,182 · Postal code: 84039

In 1485, inside the castle of Teggiano, Antonello Sanseverino hatched the conspiracy of the barons against Ferrante of Aragon. Twelve years later the reckoning came: the royal army laid siege to the town, but the walls held out so long that the matter ended in an honourable surrender, its terms drawn up by a local notary, which spared the prince's life and the people who had rushed to defend him.

The real name, though, is another one for the people of Teggiano. Until 1862 the town was called Diano, and gave its name to the Vallo di Diano; then the Italian government ordered that identical place-names be got rid of, and Diano went back to the Latin Tegianum. Canon Stefano Macchiaroli called it an unacceptable anachronism, and to this day people here still say they are going a Dianu.
