Feast of Saint John Paul II
📅 Every year, on 22 October
On 22 October Terre del Reno celebrates its patron Saint John Paul II; the municipal territory includes the Bosco di Sant'Agostino, also known as Panfilia.
The comune came into being on the first of January 2017 from the merger of Mirabello and Sant'Agostino, decided by the inhabitants in a consultative referendum. The coat of arms too came out of a vote: the citizens chose it in 2021, and it says exactly what the comune is. The Reno crosses the shield as a wavy band of silver and blue, out of which grow two sprays of oak and ash that intertwine and enclose two stars, one for each of the two towns.
Sant'Agostino, the older of the two, was born from a notarial deed: on the twelfth of January 1507 the Bolognese cousins Francesco and Girolamo Bianchetti founded the village on watery ground called La Palù, and for its first centuries the place was known as Sant'Agostino delle paludi; the parish broke away from Santa Maria di Galliera because two miles in winter were too many. The river decided the rest: with the Panfilia breach of 1750 the Reno changed course and covered the whole territory, so the inhabitants moved the church to higher ground, where mass began to be celebrated in 1769.
