Bertinoro stands on the summit of Mount Cesubeo, but the village exists because another one was pulled down. In the early eleventh century count Ugo placed his own castle under the authority of the archbishop of Ravenna, and in exchange the archbishop undertook to destroy the rival castrum of Monte Maggio, on the neighbouring hill, and to move its inhabitants down here. Castrum Cesubeum was thus refounded under the name it still bears, Castrum Brittinori, and the county passed to a local house loyal to the emperor.

In front of the town hall stands the Colonna delle Anella, with twelve rings to which travellers tied their horse: the ring they chose said which family of the town would put them up. The column was removed in 1570 and found again only in 1922, the year it also entered the municipal coat of arms with the motto Hospitalitatis monumentum; set upright again in 1926, it still governs the rite, for at the September hospitality festival envelopes bearing the name of the host family are tied to the rings.
