Saint Nicholas of Bari, patron of Camposanto
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Camposanto celebrates Saint Nicholas of Bari on 6 December, in the church dedicated to him.
The name has nothing to do with cemeteries: Campus Sanctus appears in 1445 and comes, almost certainly, from the Santi, a noble Ferrarese family who at the end of the fourteenth century received large estates in the Modena country from the Este. On the arms, instead, there are two crossed swords, and those recall a battle.
On the eighth of February 1743, in the middle of the War of the Austrian Succession, the Spaniards of general Gages clashed here with the Austro-Piedmontese of field marshal von Traun, and had to retreat. Today the comune keeps its acetaia inside the Torre Ferraresi, and along the embankment of the old Bologna-Verona railway runs the Ciclovia del Sole.
