Novi di Modena

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 10,972 · Postal code: 41016

The first document naming a Castrum Nove dates from 979, a contract signed by the bishop of Reggio Emilia. That castle stood on an awkward border, where the lands of the Este, the Gonzaga, the Pico and the Pio all met, and it was attacked, burned and finally razed to the ground in 1537: nothing of it is left today. The town hall too speaks of a function rather than a power: it was built in 1840 at the entrance of the village as a post station for changing horses, with a wide portico and a drinking trough in front.

The clock tower, of the early eighteenth century, held a bell given to the community by Alberto Pio in 1523; cracked by the shock of the twenty-ninth of May 2012, it collapsed on the third of June with the one that followed. The war had already left its mark: in the early hours of the seventh of August 1944, in the hamlet of Rovereto sulla Secchia, the Republican fascists carried out the killing remembered as the massacre of the intellectuals.
