San Possidonio

Province: Modena · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,621 · Postal code: 41039

The village was called Garfaniana, and it was a small posting station on the road between north and south. It took the name it has now when the bishop of Reggio, Azzo, obtained from Louis II the relics of Saint Possidonius and brought them here: the church that keeps them already appears in a document of 962.

In 1789 don Giuseppe Andreoli was born here, a carbonaro priest whom duke Francesco IV had executed at Rubiera in 1822: the monument in the square shows him beside Italy and a soldier. The earthquake of 2012 brought down the bell tower and half the church; the civil protection services of Tuscany and Lazio pitched the tents, and the streets where the temporary houses later arrived are still called via Toscana and via Lazio.
