In 1555 the Spaniards besieged the castle of Casalgrande Alto: the defenders held out as long as they had ammunition, then surrendered on the promise that their lives would be spared, and were hanged all the same. The town then belonged to the Boiardo, counts of Scandiano, who governed it until 1560.
The name first appears in a parchment of 945, in which the bishop of Reggio assigns the tithes of the villa of Casalgrande. Today the town, 18,635 residents, lies on the left bank of the Secchia where the river comes out into the plain, and belongs with Sassuolo, Fiorano and Castellarano to the ceramics district: the old part, with the church and the castle, is up at Casalgrande Alto.
