Reggio Emilia RE

Region: Emilia-Romagna · 42 towns · Population: 517,316

The Italian flag was invented here. In 1797 delegates from Reggio, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara met in the Sala del Tricolore, proclaimed the Cispadane Republic and chose a green, white and red banner for it; in 1848 the same design became the national flag. The province is the third most populous in Emilia-Romagna, with 42 municipalities spread between the Po plain in the north and the Tuscan border in the south; Parma lies to the west across the Enza torrent, Modena to the east.

The other name to know is Canossa, the castle of Countess Matilda in the hills south of the city, where Emperor Henry IV came to make his peace with the pope. Reggio Emilia itself, a city of more than 160,000, fills a comfortable day; Scandiano and Casalgrande sit where the plain starts to rise, Correggio out in the flat country to the north.
