Misano Adriatico

The old village sits up on the hill, at Misano Monte, where in 997 the parish church of San Biagio was built: one of the oldest in the area, and the houses grew up around it. From 1295 to 1528 the settlement belonged to the Malatesta, who raised a castle here, of which the entrance arch and part of a tower survive. That tower ended up on the coat of arms, and beside it they placed a handshake: it recalls the concord of the outlying hamlets that agreed to recognise themselves in a single tower.

An autonomous comune since 1511, carved out of the territory of San Clemente, Misano lost and regained its independence several times for budgetary reasons, until the final separation from San Giovanni in Marignano in 1827. In 1935 it came close to disappearing into Cattolica, which wanted its beach for its own tourist trade, and the request was turned down; the name was argued over until 1938, when the present Misano Adriatico took the place of the Villa Vittoria in use since 1862. The town hall came down to the sea in 1949. The neighbourhoods, for their part, record nineteenth-century emigration and the journey home: Misano Brasile, Villaggio Argentina, Canadà, Uruguay, Paraguay.
