Cordenons

Province: Pordenone · Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia · Population: 18,203 · Postal code: 33084

Here the water disappears and comes back: the Cellina and the Meduna, once they reach the plain, slip under the stones of the Magredi — a stretch of gravel that looks like a riverbed without a river — and rise again further south, in the Vinchiaruzzo springs, where the clay soil holds them in clear pools known here as olle.

In the Magredi nests the stone-curlew, a rare bird that hides among the pebbles. The town's name comes from Cortis Naon, the court on the Naone, that is the Noncello: the document dates from 897. An independent comune since 1 January 1814, it has a cathedral of 1778 and a bell tower of seventy-one metres, finished in 1908 after twenty-seven years of work. There are 18,203 residents.
