The patron saint of Cassino and of Europe is Saint Benedict of Nursia, founder of the Order of Saint Benedict and father of Western monasticism, born in Nursia on 2 March 480 and died at Montecassino on 21 March 547, the day on which the town celebrates him.
In the week preceding the feast, numerous events follow one another, culminating on 21 March with the «Terra Sancti Benedicti» historical procession, a re-enactment of medieval traditions, customs and costumes held every year since 1994. The town, dominated by the Abbey of Montecassino, also holds the Rocca Janula, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Roman Theatre, testimony to its long history.
