Saint Amasius, patron of Piedimonte San Germano
📅 Every year, on 23 January
Piedimonte San Germano celebrates Saint Amasius on 23 January.
Piedimonte San Germano has 6,036 inhabitants at the foot of Monte Cairo, in the Latin Valley. The name says exactly where it is: at the foot of the mountain, and next to the place that used to be called San Germano and today is Cassino. Little is left of the older past, because in the Second World War the town was almost entirely destroyed; what stands is the castle of the counts of Aquino, which count Adenolfo had rebuilt in 1061 over an older fortification believed to go back to the Volsci.
Since 1972 the comune's territory has held the Cassino car plant, the one where the Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio are assembled. What that means for a village of six thousand people is told by the figures: in 2015 the firms based here employed nearly five thousand eight hundred people, more than five per cent of all the jobs in the province of Frosinone. Every year, with the re-enactment called "Guerra e Pace", the town remembers the other chapter instead, the one of its liberation.
