Feast of the Santissimo Salvatore
📅 Every year, on 6 August
On 6 August Collepardo, a municipality of 975 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone, celebrates its patron the Santissimo Salvatore (Most Holy Saviour).
The karst shows everywhere here: the gorges of the Cosa, the caves of the Bambocci and above all the Pozzo d'Antullo, a great collapsed sinkhole. In the caves traces of the cult of Mithras have been found: caverns like these were opened as sanctuaries along the main roads, for the pilgrims and the traders who passed.
There are four explanations of the name: some derive it from the gattopardi, the wildcats, and on the arms there is indeed a cat drinking at a stream; some from the commander of a Gothic colony; some from the Latin collis arduis, the steep hill; and a local scholar from pardes, a garden: the garden hill. Above the springs of the Cosa the Colonna built a castle in the twelfth century, where the charterhouse of Trisulti stands now.
