Outside the Porta Sanguinaria a Roman citizen, Aulus Quinctilius Priscus, had his will carved into the rock: his wishes have stood there for centuries, where anyone passing can read them. A little higher runs the cyclopean wall, two thousand five hundred metres of dry-set interlocking blocks, with twelve gates.
At the top, on the acropolis, the cathedral of 1108 has a mosaic floor and a Cosmatesque altar under a ciborium by Drudo da Trivio. From 1198 to 1557 Ferentino was the seat of Campagna e Marittima, and of Pope Celestine V, who founded a monastery here, the heart remains, kept by the Poor Clares. There are 20,966 residents.
