The patron of Ventotene is Saint Candida, celebrated on 20 September, the last of ten days of festivities both sacred and secular.
According to tradition the saint was killed by the Romans and her body, thrown into the sea, was found on the island's coast; the celebrations close with the procession of the Boat of Saint Candida and a contest of paper hot-air balloons over the sea.
