Casamicciola Terme

Province: Naples · Region: Campania · Population: 8,080 · Postal code: 80074

On the evening of 28 July 1883 an earthquake razed Casamicciola and killed more than one thousand seven hundred people. The town stood high up on the hill, where the baths and the hotels were; after the disaster they rebuilt it lower down, near the sea, first as huts for the homeless and then for good. The centre is still there, around Piazza Marina.

Among the buildings that came down to the shore was the Pio Monte della Misericordia, founded in 1610 by a congregation of Neapolitan nobles: it was a thermal establishment for the poor, who received treatment, board and lodging free of charge for two weeks. It worked until the sixties; today it is a ruin you see as soon as you reach the harbour.
