Latina is the coastal slice of Lazio between Rome and Campania, with the Tyrrhenian Sea along its entire western side and the provinces of Frosinone and Rome inland. The capital, also called Latina, is a city of nearly 118,000 people on the plain behind the shore; the province's 33 municipalities add up to a little over half a million residents, spread between beaches, headlands and hill towns.

Most visitors come down from Rome for the sea, and Sperlonga and Gaeta are the reason. Terracina mixes both: the Roman temple of Jupiter Anxur stands on the ridge above the town and is the image that sticks. Inland, at Cisterna di Latina, the garden of Ninfa grew up over the ruins of an abandoned medieval settlement — if you have only one afternoon here, give it to Ninfa.
