Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows
📅 Every year, on 15 September
On 15 September Accumoli celebrates Our Lady of Sorrows; the municipality is home to six "università agrarie", bodies that have managed the town's collective assets for centuries.
On 24 August 2016 the earthquake had its epicentre here: magnitude six, eleven dead, four in the town and seven in the hamlets, the old centre devastated. It was not the first time: the valley had already been shaken in 1639 and in 1703. Under the Aragonese, Accumoli had been given the title of city, with four gates in its walls.
The comune borders Abruzzo, the Marche and Umbria: together with Arquata del Tronto, which lies next to it, it is one of only two comuni in Italy touching three regions other than their own. Until 1927 it was on the other side of one of those borders, in the province of L'Aquila. The civic tower, of the twelfth century, was the sign of the town's liberties and has no equal in the valley.
