Roiate

Province: Rome · Region: Lazio · Population: 749 · Postal code: 00030

In 1435 the men of Roiate, together with those of Affile and Ponza, starved out the castle of Roccasecca, razed it to the ground and divided its inhabitants, deporting them to the three villages. The saying has stayed: «Ponza, Afile e Rujate sò tre cagne arabbiate», three mad bitches. On the top of the hill the remains of the demolished houses can still be seen.

In the village there is a boulder on which tradition says Saint Benedict left the print of his body: a church was built over it and, for a while, a convent of nuns. Now and then drops of water rise from the stone — they call it the sweating — and people read omens in it, the last time at the Irpinia earthquake. Roiate was a free commune from 962 and a fief of the monks of Subiaco throughout the Middle Ages.
