Feast of Saint Barbara
📅 Every year, on 4 December
On 4 December Barbarano Romano celebrates its patron Saint Barbara; the municipal territory preserves the Etruscan archaeological area of San Giuliano.
The village sits on a wedge of tufa between two gorges, and its plan is a herringbone: one main street down the middle and two parallel to it on either side. Where nature did not defend it they put walls, and not once only: three circuits one inside the other, with the square towers of the fourteenth century and the round ones added at the end of the fifteenth. On the church door a marble plaque says it was built in 1280, while the papacy was vacant.
In front of the hill opens the area of San Giuliano, with the Etruscan necropolises cut into the tufa: tombs from the seventh to the third century before Christ, and the largest of them is called the Queen's Tomb. The digs were begun in the nineteen-sixties by Gustaf VI Adolf, king of Sweden; in March 2024 another large tomb came to light.
