The Etruscans painted their afterlife here: the tombs of the Monterozzi necropolis — UNESCO-listed since 2004 — preserve banquets, dances, leopards and blue demons with a freshness that disarms, each visited one by one along the hill. In the museum at Palazzo Vitelleschi, the terracotta Winged Horses alone are worth the trip.
The medieval town, bristling with towers, watches the sea from which ancient Tarquinia ruled the Tyrrhenian. Between a fish lunch at the Lido and a glass from the surrounding hills, ancient Tarchna remains one of Lazio's densest day trips.

Tarquinia celebrates Our Lady of Valverde on 8 May with a solemn procession; her icon, which arrived from the Holy Land in 1189 at the time of the Third Crusade, is kept in the sanctuary raised to that rank in 1984, in the town that was the cradle of Etruscan civilisation.
