Irma lies in the upper Val Trompia, in the valley that bears its name, at the foot of Monte Ario and along the Mella di Irma. It has been known since 1300 and has no hamlets: it has localities, called Forelli, Löf, Belvedere, Vezzale, Bumaghe and San Carlo, from which the water path sets out. On its coat of arms are a gentian flower, to say how high the village stands, and two stars for its two main settlements.
Like many tiny villages, Irma lost its comune under fascism: from 1927 to 1955 it was a hamlet of Bovegno, and it took twenty-eight years to get the town hall back. Today it is the second least populated comune in the province of Brescia, after Magasa. Between the wars the Casa dell'Alpino was built here, opened on 20 October 1938, and it still takes in school parties and scout groups: in a village of a hundred and forty people it remains the building that brings visitors.
