Risotto alla Milanese rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter, creamy and soft
Rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter: Milan's golden dish, tied by legend to a glassmaker of the Duomo in 1574.
Read more →Brescia is the largest province in Lombardy by area, and it changes completely from one end to the other: it starts in the southern Rhaetian Alps, follows the Oglio, Mella and Chiese rivers down, and finishes in the Lombard plain. Two lakes sit inside it, Iseo in the west and Garda in the east, the biggest lake in Italy, which Brescia shares with the provinces of Verona and Trento. Its capital is the city of Brescia, and it holds 205 municipalities.
On Lake Garda the fixed point is Sirmione, where the Roman ruins called the Grotte di Catullo look straight out over the water, while Desenzano del Garda makes the easier base for touring the lake. Brescia itself gets overlooked, which is a mistake: the Roman Capitolium, the church of San Salvatore, the Duomo Nuovo and the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo all sit within a short walk of each other, and without the queues you would face elsewhere.
