In the sanctuary of Montecastello, perched sheer above Lake Garda, hangs a painted ex voto that tells the story of a manhunt: the hunt for the bandit Giovanni Beatrice, known as Zanzanù, who for years had robbed merchants all over the upper lake and who, in the seventeenth century, was caught stealing here, chased through the mountains by the men of Tignale and killed after a battle.

The other story is about lemons. The Limonaia del Prà de la Fam, built in the eighteenth century and still standing, sent citrus as far as Germany, Poland and Scandinavia: the lake's mild climate let them grow, and customs duties kept the southern fruit away. With Italian unification the duties fell, a plant disease arrived, and the trade came to an end.
