Feast of Saint James
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Piubega, a municipality of 1,768 inhabitants in the province of Mantua, celebrates its patron Saint James (San Giacomo).
The name of Piubega has more than one explanation. One traces it to a Roman Publicius, who is said to have founded the castle here; the other, the finer one, to publica, that is public: a village open to all. Of the castle the tower remains, which is also the bell tower, but the medieval stronghold was not of stone: it was made of mud and raised earth, with four watchtowers at the corners, and of that way of defending oneself with whatever the ground offered the Mantuan plain is full.
For almost half a century the village also had its own station: between 1886 and 1933 the Mantua-Asola tramway passed through here, and when the tramway closed the buses remained, which still today run to the provincial capital. The centre gathers around piazza Matteotti, with the parish church of San Giacomo Maggiore, the palazzo Cavallara-Pavesi and the monument to the infantrymen. In the village a weather station is at work, run together with the Centro Meteorologico Lombardo: the upper plain, here, measures itself.
