Viadana

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 19,157 · Postal code: 46019

A small lowland town with a rugby club among Italy's best: Viadana is the plain's most likeable sporting anomaly, where the oval ball has been provincial religion since the 1970s and the yellow-and-black club has brought near-titles and full internationals to the banks of the Po. The pitch here counts as much as the piazza.

The Mantuan municipality of 19,157 lives off the great river — floodplains, poplar groves, the river port — and generous land: this is PGI Mantuan melon country, the sweet of summer on Po valley tables. The Romans' ancient Vitaliana is today the industrious capital of the Casalasco-Viadanese district, halfway between Parma and Mantua.
