Cosio Valtellino has its town hall in another village: the seat of the comune is not Cosio but Regoledo. The name of Cosio appears in a document of 968, and in the eleventh century the first Cluniac house of the area rose here, the abbey of San Pietro in Vallate, born of a donation of 1078; in time the monks came to it less and less, perhaps because it was too far from everything, perhaps because of the harshness of the climate. In 1158 Frederick Barbarossa invested the Visdomini with the fief, and they later held the hereditary office of podestà of the Valtellina.
Bona Lombarda came from here. She was a peasant girl, and she was pasturing the flocks when Pietro Brunoro of the counts Sanvitale caught sight of her; after the battle of Delebio in 1432 he was governing Morbegno on behalf of the Duchy of Milan. He fell in love with her and married her, and from that moment she followed him in all his feats of war. How small the village was is told by the bishop of Como, Feliciano Ninguarda, who in 1598 counted about two hundred and fifty inhabitants there.
