Risotto alla Milanese rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter, creamy and soft
Rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter: Milan's golden dish, tied by legend to a glassmaker of the Duomo in 1574.
Read more →Few Italian provinces are better known by the name of a valley than by the name of their capital. Sondrio is one: the Valtellina, the main valley running through it, has effectively lent its name to the whole province. This is mountain country, 77 municipalities and just over 180,000 people, with a provincial capital that stops short of 22,000 residents and villages down at a few dozen.
Bormio and Livigno draw more visitors than Sondrio itself. Bormio rewards anyone who looks past the ski slopes: the Rezia alpine botanical garden, the church of Santi Gervasio e Protasio, the church of Sant'Antonio Abate. Lower down the valley, Morbegno, Tirano and Chiavenna are working towns rather than resorts, and they are where you see what the Valtellina is like outside the tourist season.
