Feast of Saint Agatha
📅 Every year, on 5 February
On 5 February Tovo di Sant'Agata celebrates its patroness Saint Agatha, whose name also appears in the town's name; the Castello di Bellaguarda stands in its territory.
For a comune of a few hundred people, Tovo has changed its coat of arms recently and thoroughly. From the nineteen fifties it used a silver shield with a black bull standing on a stone bridge of three arches, above a blue field. Then, by a resolution of the town council of the twenty-ninth of July 2009, it adopted the insignia it bears now: a gold field crossed by a black wall with four Ghibelline merlons, the first and the last resting against the flanks of the shield; on the wall a gold bull, passant and described in the blazon as warlike; and beneath the wall a single gold arch thrown from one flank to the other, with green showing through its opening and four wavy silver bars for the water. The bull has stayed; the bridge has lost two arches and gained a river.
Two roads pass here, and both are hard going. The first is ancient: the via Spluga, the Roman road that linked Milan with the Splügen pass, crossed this territory. The second is a climb. From Tovo di Sant'Agata starts one of the sides that lead up to the Passo del Mortirolo, and the Giro d'Italia has tackled it exactly once, in 2012: it is a particularly hard side, with a stretch between dirt and concrete, and more irregular than the classic ascent that starts from Mazzo di Valtellina, which is the one the racing world knows.
