Castelleone di Suasa

Province: Ancona · Region: Marche · Population: 1,702 · Postal code: 60010

Down in the valley lay Suasa, a Roman town with its amphitheatre, its theatre and its forum. After the Gothic war the people left it — the valley floor could not be defended — and went up into the hills; the abandoned city became a quarry: its stones were burnt for lime and everything portable was carried off. Then, within a few years, the rains brought down from the hills enough mud to bury it. Only the amphitheatre stayed in sight, half sunk in clay.

The medieval village was called Conocla, for the cone of its hill: first written down in January 1186. The digging began in 1987 and gave back the basalt street, the forum, the amphitheatre and the great house of the Coiedii. The people here were known as onion growers, and the onion still has its feast at the start of September.
