Feast of Saint Paul the Apostle
📅 Every year, on 25 January
On 25 January San Paolo di Jesi celebrates its patron Saint Paul the Apostle, to whom the town's church is dedicated and whose name also appears in the municipality's name.
The village takes its name from a small church dedicated to Saint Paul, perhaps a monastic one, and it appears for the first time as a castle of the Jesi contado in 1275. It belonged to that contado for a very long time: when in the first half of the fifteenth century Jesi passed to the Papal States, San Paolo too acknowledged the sovereignty of the pope, and its condition as a castle of the contado lasted until 1808. After the Napoleonic period it changed administrative shape several times, and regained its autonomy in 1818.
In the middle centuries of the modern age the village had six churches inside the built-up area, the most important being Santa Maria d'Arco, with its Augustinian monastery: a great many for a place of a few hundred souls. Today the parish church of San Paolo Apostolo and the church of the Madonna della Misericordia remain, and what surrounds the village is vines: San Paolo stands on the right bank of the Esino, inside the Castelli di Jesi area, where Verdicchio is made.
