Saint Giles the Abbot and the Museum of Wine Art
📅 Every year, on 1 September
Staffolo celebrates Saint Giles the Abbot on 1 September, in the town that hosts the Museum of Wine Art.
The name comes from the Lombard Staffil, the post that marked a border: Staffolo stands exactly on the line that divided the Byzantine Marche of the Pentapolis from those of the duchy of Spoleto, and it appears as Stafuli in a document of 1078. In the thirteenth century the village read its own name as «stirrup» and gave itself the badge it still carries: banderia rubra cum stapha alba, a red flag with a white stirrup.
In the same century the Staffolo couplets were written down, «Ecco lo palio rosatu per amor de lo Esinatu», among the earliest verse in the vernacular in the Marche. Wine was already the wealth of the hill: when the mercenary company of fra Moriale fell upon the village, Villani's chronicles say it emptied the cellars and killed seven hundred people.
