In 1480, when the Turks besieged Otranto and razed Roca to the ground, Caprarica took in those who had fled from there, and from then on it was larger. On the coat of arms there is a goat with seven ears of wheat: the name is said to come from capra ricca, rich in goats, because goats were raised here and milk was made.

Rebuilding piazza Vittoria brought to light two churches, one under the other: the one demolished in 1958 and, lower down, one of the thirteenth century with Byzantine frescoes and inscriptions in Greek, and a carved eagle that perhaps stood on the pulpit. Around it was the cemetery: in the tombs cut into the rock the skeletons still wore their bronze buckles and earrings.
