Saint Vitus and his column
📅 Every year, on 15 June
Castri di Lecce celebrates Saint Vitus on 15 June, in the church dedicated to him.
From 1262 to 1891 the Castri were two: Castrifrancone and Castriguarino, born from the splitting of a single village. From 1709 they even had the same lord, the Vernazza of Genoa, and still remained two separate places; the union came with a council resolution, on 12 November 1891.
Of that division two mother churches remain, a few streets apart: Santa Maria della Visitazione, which belonged to Castriguarino, and San Vito, which belonged to Castrifrancone and was rebuilt in the eighteenth century looking to Borromini. The name comes from castrum, the fortress, and in Griko the village is ta Kastrìa; people, though, call it Castrì, and Castrì is what the road signs say.
