The Holy Crucifix, patron of May
📅 Every year, from 2 to 4 May
Muro Leccese celebrates the Holy Crucifix from 2 to 4 May. The town's other patron, Saint Orontius, is celebrated on 26 August.
The name comes from the walls: the Messapians enclosed a little more than a hundred hectares within a circuit of squared blocks four kilometres long, and the town inside it was one of the most flourishing of its time, until Roman troops razed it in the third century before Christ.
In 924 the Saracens destroyed what had been rebuilt, and the town has kept the memory on its own arms, where there is a Moor's head: you find it again carved above the great window of the mother church, raised at the end of the seventeenth century and so full of paintings that it serves as a picture gallery. Of the ancient Messapian city important finds remain, and it is for those that Muro has been declared a town of art.
